Server Side Code

Ever wondered how shopping baskets, booking systems and the like work?

They're all handled by a program that sits on your web server, which then creates the pages that your users see. There are several different code languages - Perl, PHP and ASP to name a few.

Many web designers use off-the-shelf scripts for these. While there are many web designers out there, the number of 'coders' is far fewer. Not so with IAS Solutions. We can write our own code in Perl and PHP (as well as javascript - but see below) and we constantly monitor new languages to see if there are advantages to be had in adding them to our repertoire. Right now, we're not programming ASP - click HERE to find out why - but we're seriously looking at Ruby.

Now, that having been said, we'll use off-the-shelf scripts where possible. There is, after all, no point in reinventing the wheel. But when the situation arises that a script just won't do what you want, or there's nothing out there to meet your requirements, we have the ability to produce a bespoke set of code or modify an existing script.

So, where can code be used? The answer is as diverse as the number of uses the web has been put to. Shopping baskets and online shops are the most common, but even the most humble enquiry form needs code to process it. Supposing you want people to register to use a portion of your site? Do you really want to be adding new users by hand, or would an automated solution be a better idea (and a better impression for your users).

We don't have to be the one who built your website either. We are happy to work with your existing web designer to produce what you need. If you are a web designer and need some custom code for a clients project, then give us a call, we're happy to discuss what you're doing (and will, of course, not disclose anything we've discussed).

Client Side Code & AJAX

This section is also the most relevant for another type of code commonly found on web pages - Javascript. The difference is that Javascript runs on the users end rather than the web server. It's generally used to perform changes on a web page without the need to re-load the page, or float objects or menus over the top of the main site (the menus above are a good example of this). Combining the 'client-side' abilities of Javascript with server side code has lead to the development of a new and exciting set of procedures generally termed AJAX. We are currently developing new ideas using AJAX principles for the next generation of websites, but you can already see the potential in some sites that are already using it. Click HERE to find out why we're so excited about AJAX, and to see some examples of it in action.
